Patty Jenkins chose her Wonder Woman sequel's setting and Watch Believer Onlinetime period for a specific reason, it turns out.
The Wonder Woman 1984director explained some of her thinking behind the upcoming movie's Cold War-era setting during at appearance at Comic-Con in San Diego on Saturday. For Jenkins, the first and second movie both occur when they do for a purpose.

"Really, when you dig into the era, they serve as metaphors for things that are true always."
Jenkins went on to acknowledge the abundance of recent examples in popular fiction that embraced an '80s setting. She promised that Wonder Woman 1984embraces its own "look and feel," informed by her own experiences growing up at that time -- experiences that left her with a very particular vision of what the '80s represented more broadly.
"The reason I wanted to set it here is because it really was mankind at its best and worst. We’re aware of some of the prices of our behavior nowadays, but we weren’t then," she said, adding, "There were a lot of beautiful and incredible things about the 1980s, too, at the same time."
By bringing Wonder Woman into that timeframe, Jenkins got to tell a story about the DC superhero seeing humanity "at our most extreme."
Sounds familiar, doesn't it? Sort of like the experience of living through 2018?
"We though [the '80s] could go on forever," Jenkins said. "Everything that was going on then, we thought it could go on forever. What an interesting time to reflect on right now."
