LOS ANGELES -- Hot off his Emmy win for Mr. Robot,gay public sex video Rami Malek has signed on to play Freddie Mercury in the long-gestating Queen movie Bohemian Rhapsody, which will now be directed by X-Men maestro Bryan Singer, Mashablehas confirmed.
20th Century Fox and New Regency will co-finance the project, which will be produced by Graham King of GK Films, who has been developing the Queen movie for nearly a decade.
Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything) wrote the script, which has been approved by original Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor, who will serve as music producers.
Sacha Baron Cohen and Ben Whishaw were previously attached to play Mercury, but both of those incarnations ran into stumbling blocks.
Malek broke out in Short Term 12opposite Brie Larson, and he's currently shooting the Papillonremake with Charlie Hunnam.
Singer last directed X-Men: Apocalypseand has been working on an update of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The director confirmed the news on Instagram in a post that can be seen below.
