By all standards, Blair Cherelstein (@blurchur) leads the life of your average 22-year-old. “I wake up, I go to class, my job, my internship,” says Blair, a film major in West Virginia. “There’s this misperception that trans people operate under a different way of life, but I don’t do anything that a cis person [someone who identifies with their birth sex] would do differently in their day.” Having known since the age of 4 that she was a girl who happened to be born with the body of a boy — “Health class was confusing as hell” — Blair started taking hormones more than four years ago to transition into the woman she is today. “To me, femininity means power,” says Blair. “I’m so proud of the sense of community I feel with other women.” In honor of International #WomensDay, Blair is going to keep it simple: “I just celebrate it by being in public and holding my girlfriend’s hand.” This post is in celebration of Women’s History Month. Throughout March, we’ll be highlighting the stories of women doing extraordinary things around the world.
