Sometimes, knowing that something awful is going to happen beforehand can soften the blow -- if only a little. Even so, the sudden death of Michael (Brett Dier) on Jane the Virgin was a major emotional blow, both behind the scenes and in the audience.
Knowing how devastating this would be for fans, showrunner Jennie Urman wrote a blog post explaining how it came to be and what lies ahead for Jane.

But what Urman wanted to emphasize was that the show's message of hope will not be extinguished.
Which brings me to something I feel really badly about. The timing. I’ve had so many tweets lately about how Jane is a bright spot these days. And I know you just watched a gut punch of an episode. So, I just wanted to reassure you that Jane’s optimism will rise up.

Dier thanked Urman and his cast mates, as well as the rest of the Jane the Virginteam.

Cast members began posting about Dier on social media shortly after the episode aired, starting with his "partner in artistic crime," Gina Rodriguez:

Rodriguez may bring most of the on-screen tears, but this time Rafael A.K.A. Justin Baldoni gave her a run for her money.

Camil reposted Baldoni's photo with the short, sweet caption: "We adore you @brettdier You are everything #JaneTheVirgin."
On his last day of filming, Dier recorded a video to Rodriguez's phone while in character as Michael and it is one hundred percent not okay.
