While The Meg's premise is simple, and you can totally watch the new sequel without seeing the first film, why would you rid yourself of the blissful occasion of watching Jason Statham beat up a giant shark not once, but twice? So if you're ready to dive deep into the darkest corners of the ocean and meet Meg the friendly Megalodon, here's everything you need to know.

Loosely based on Steve Alten's novel, Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror, The Megfollows rescue diver, Jonas Taylor (Statham), as he tries to save a crew trapped in a deep-sea submersible at the bottom of the Pacific. Why is the crew trapped you might ask? Well, because a 75-foot-long prehistoric shark, long thought to be extinct, attacked their ship on sight.

Meg 2: The Trenchreleases in theaters on August 4. The sequel sees the return of Statham as Taylor who's up against another megalodon (plus some other terrifying sea nightmares).
